Hans Kes, a parish clerk in Puhja, is known as the first Estonian poet, who was and is famous for his lament "Oh! Ma vaene Tardo liin" ("Oh Me, Poor Tartu Town!"), which describes the destruction of Tartu during the Great Northern War. In addition, we know that Hans lead the revolt against Swedish supply collectors. It is very likely, that Hans Kes served as a parish clerk until his death in 1734.
