Chroniclers: the story of Henry of Latvia and his chronicle
Priest Henry and his chronicle hold a very important position in the earlier history of Estonia. Without this source we would not know half as much about the Baltic Crusade in Livonia and Estonia as we do. In addition, Henry's work gives hints about contemporary life, traditions and beliefs.
There is little known about Henry himself, and most of it are just presumptions. Nonetheless, some events can be restored with the help of the chronicle and other written sources.Story events:
- 1188 yr Henry's presumable birth in Magdenburg, Germany
- 1205 yr Henry comes to Livonia
- 1208 yr Henry is inaugurated the priest of Rubense
- 06.1211 The summer of 1211: Lembitu is mentioned for the first time; Rubene area is pillaged
- 1224 yr Presumed writing time
- 1259 yr Henry is mentioned for the last time
- 1300 yr Codex Zamoscianus
- 1740 yr First publication of Henry's chronicle
- 1881 yr First Estonian translation of Henry's chronicle
- 1982 yr Estonian-Latin edition is published
- 22.05.2008 International conference dedicated to Henry takes place in Tallinn
