Several nations of different ethnic, language and cultural background have lived here about 10 000 years b.c. from the foundation of the Estonian territory at the end of the last ice age. The origin of the first people settled down in Estonia is unknown. During the ancient times both the Finno-Ugric and Indo-European tribes settled down in Estonia. The Estonian main nation - Estonians - was established on the basis of the Finno-Ugric language and culture. Since XIII century the Germans, Swedes and Russians settled down in Estonia who became the main minor nationalities of Estonia for the next centuries. Besides them, the Latvians, Finnish, Votians, Jews and Gypsies have lived in Estonia to a smaller extent. All nations having lived in Estonia together with Estonians, especially larger minor nationalities, have greatly influenced the Estonian society and culture during the years and thus received by that the firm place for themselves in the Estonian history.
