The conflict ends
July 1536
In 1535, after Wolter von Plettenberg had died, several attempts were made to resolve the conflict, but without success. Buxhoeveden treated the vassals in Läänemaa very harshly. In the summer of the same year, he captured the fort in Vigala, and despite the promises not to, he imprisoned several nobles present there. Margrave Wilhelm could not do anything but watch, helplessly. He was afraid that Buxhoeveden will also attack his domains inside the bishopric, but this did not happen. At the same time, he stubbornly refused to give up his fight for bishop's throne of Ösel-Wiek.
The conflict was solved in 1536. In a meeting, held in July, parties agreed that Buxhoeveden will become the official ruler of the whole bishopric. Wilhelm was promised 20,000 Riga marks as a compensation for giving up his claims, the sum was to be paid by vassals of Läänemaa. This result was very disadvantageous to Wilhelm and his allies, but it was evident that he could not hope for any better solution, because Buxhoeveden and the Order held a common ground. Another thing that aggravate Wilhelm was the fact that out of the promised 20,000 marks he received only 9000, because the war had pushed the vassals to the verge of bankruptcy.
