Russow became the pastor of the Church of the Holy Ghost in 1567, which meant that he had reached a relatively high position at quite a young age. However, he did not go further career-wise; it is unknown whether because of his own lack of interest, or due to some external reasons, like his debated Estonian background. Being the pastor of the Church of the Holy Ghost, Russow was highly respected, and at the end of his life, he was addressed as "senior" - being the oldest pastor in the town.
