During the XIII-XIV centuries, different kinds of forts were built to Estonia. Largest and mightiest of those were constructed by the Livonian Order, most well known are the forts of Viljandi, Tallinn, Narva and Paide. But additional 12 forts were built. Most of the forts served as the residences of the officials of the Orders: commanders and bailiffs, but some functioned and side forts.
