The Finnish in Estonia

to map

1600

The Finnish had been living at least in Tallinn already during the Middle Ages, but the considerable number of them arrived to Estonia after the Livonian War, when several places were thinly populated.

The second larger migration wave was carried out almost at the same terms after the Nordic War in XVIII century. The Finnish settled down next to the Estonians and finally also took over the Estonian language and traditions. A lot of Finnish has preserved of these times in the North-eastern dialect of the Estonian language.
