The visits of the Russian emperors to Estonia

In the years 1796-1917 6 emperors ruled in Russia (Paul I, Alexander I, Nikolai I, Alexander II, Alexander III and Nikolai II) who all visited also Estonia several times.

Their visits were mostly related to the fulfilment of state obligations and accompanied by outer shine, ceremonialism and celebrations.

But the emperors and the members of their family visited Estonia also when having a holiday and made fast trips through, in case of which no major ceremonies took place.

In general the Russian rulers were quite interested in the provinces of the Baltic Sea, including Estonia, and stopped in Estonia often for several days.

They mostly visited Tallinn and its surrounding, in the second half of the 19th century the popular stopping place was also Haapsalu.
