Red Army bombs Estonian towns

to map

06. March 1944

From March 6-9, Red Army carried out massive air raids onto Estonian towns, attacks aimed clearly against civilians.

On March 6, Baroque Narva was destroyed,

on March 7, Jõhvi and Tapa were greatly devastated and on March 9, large part of central Tallinn was destroyed, including almost all the buildings built in the beginning of XX century. It is possible, that the Red Army tried to demoralize Estonians, but these air raids created even deeper hatred towards the Soviet rule.
