1222

Estonians understood, that foreign help is necessary, and sent their ambassadors to Pihkva and Novgorod. After successful negotiations, Russian warriors came to Estonia.

Russians were housed in Tartu, Viljandi and in some other forts. They participated in raids to Latvia, and also defended Viljandi in 1223. Russians were hung by the Germans, as helpers of apostates and to frighten others. In addition, attempts were made to make Estonians and Russians quarrel among themselves.

Saccalians sent their ambassadors to the town of Suzdal, and in 1223, Yuri Vsevolodovich, the prince of Vladimir-Suzdal, sent his brother Yaroslav to Novogord, together with a great army. From there they headed to Pihkva. There, Vladimir Mstislavich joined, and this force moved to Ugaunia. Some were housed in tartu and Otepää, then the army towards Puide in Saccalia.

There the Russian army, consisting of about 20,000 men, was met by Oeselians, who persuaded Yaroslav to move towards Denmark-held Tallinn, instead of Riga. On their way, Russians pillaged Saccalia, because prince heard what had come to the Russians defending Viljandi fort. While passing through Estonia, messengers were sent to Järva county, to Vironia and Varbola people, inviting them to join the Germans and Oeselians in thir attack on Tallinn. Great joint army came to Tallinn, and sieged it for four weeks, unsuccessfully. Angered, the Russians turned back, and pillaged Revalia on their way back.
