The New Testament

1686

Because a common way of writing could not be agreed upon, the Bible as a whole was never translated during the Swedish era. The pastor of Kambja, Andreas Virginius and his son Adrian did translate the New Testament into Southern Estonian and it was released in 1686. It was the first book that was in Estonian from cover to cover.
The manuscript for the Old Testament and the Northern Estonian version of the New Testament were completed, but never made it to printing because of the The Great Northern War.
