1300

Suure-Jaani church was built before 1300, and is the oldest stone church in Viljandimaa. Initially, it had vaults, which were destroyed in the Livonian War. Later, a wooden roof was built instead of the vaults. The church has three aisles and no sacristy, but a tall western tower. The church was greatly damaged during the XVI century and stood in ruins for a long time. Constructions began again in 1613; it burned to the ground in 1703 and was restored by 1767. The building was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style in the XIX century.

A rare orbicular cross from 1598 has preserved near the church, being originally erected in memory of Anne Raccsepa.
