1230

The first church was built to Pöide, once one of the most important centers in Saaremaa, was probably built already in 1230s.

It was made out of wood, and did not operate as a fortification. Around the 1250s, an Order's fort was built nearby, which was relatively modest in its size. This was destroyed in 1343, during the Uprising, and next Pöide fortification church was built on top of its ruins.

A cellar in the southern wing of the fort, in front of churc portal.

Assumably in the XV century, massive tower was added to the construction. Later, it received a baroque style spire, which, unfortunately, was destroyed in a fire in 1940. Since 1958 and on, several reconstruction have taken place, latter in 1995-1998.
