The construction of several fortified settlements begun during the Middle Iron Age; several of which remained in use until the end of the prehistoric age. There are 120 known ancient forts in Estonia. The largest of these were built at the end of the prehistoric age, around the second half of the XI century. The largest and mightiest of these was Varbola (see image below). Ancient forts were still built after the Crusades, they last saw use during the St. George's Night uprising.

There were several types of forts: among these were hill-, lowland- and cape forts.
