First references to the Estonians

to map

98

First writings of a people called Aestii were by a Roman geographer and historian Tacitus in 98 AD. In the previous year, he also mentioned people called Fenni, who are considered to be the ancestors of both the Estonians and the Finns.

Nowadays, it is believed that the people called aestii were the Baltic tribes, but it is not entirely impossible that they were indeed the ancestors of Estonians or other Fenno-Baltic tribes, whose habitat reached much further to south at that time. The name fenni is considered to definitely apply to Fenno-Baltic tribes. Though it is not clear if fenni referred only to people living the Finland area, or if it also included the tribes living in Estonia.
