Simon Wanradt's, a Lutheran minister working in Tallinn, earthly journey began in North-Western Germany, in Kleve dukedom, around year 1500. Is is possible, that Johann Koell, man who translated his catechism into Estonian, was born around the same time, probably near Alutaguse in North-Eastern Estonia.

There is little known about the childhood and teenage years of either men, they became more prominent during the time of the reformation movement in Tallinn.

Wanradt traveled a lot during his lifetime, and died in Gdansk in 1567; Koell spent all of his life in Livonia.
