Franciscan monastery for women is built in Tartu

to map

In 1514, it was decided to hand the former poorhouse of Tartu Holy Ghost church to the nuns of the Franciscan Order, and in 1518, pope Leo X fixed this transmission. In the following years, a monastery was built there, which operated until the Livonian War. The main building of the monastery stood on its site until the XX century, when it was demolished.

It is possible, that also a monastery for Franciscan monks operated in Tartu. Some theories say that it was built around 1466, but there is no data left to confirm its existance.
