The founding of the Brotherhood of the Sword.

1202

In order to speed up the subduing of Estonians and Livonians, Toreida priest Teoderich, founded a religious order of knights, on the example of the Order of the Temple that was active in Palestine. This order was named the Fratres militae Christi, later called the Brotherhood of the Sword, after the image of sword on their coat of arms and coats.

Most important members of the Order were professional warriors, who wore coats decorated with a red cross and a sword (see image).

Venno (Vinno) of Naumburg was appointed as the first Master of the Order; first record of the Order in the pope's chancellery documents is from 1204.
