Maardu becomes a town

to map

There was a settlement in Maardu already during the prehstoric era, but in 1920, worker's settlement began to evolve, because phosphorite was mined nearby.

During the Soviet occupation, Russian workers were sent to Maardu, and mining operations were carelessly expanded; also new chemistry factories were built, but too close to residential area.

This caused serious health problems to the people living there, until the end of 1980s. In 1951, Maardu became a borough, and a town in 1980. In 1991, it became independent from Tallinn, now operating as an separate municipality.

Maardu was fourth and last settlement, to gain town privileges during the Soviet occupation.
