to map

29. January 1936

During the prehistoric era, Otepää was one the most important centers of the county; also during Middle Ages it stood as an important settlement in the bishopric of Dorpat, second to Tartu.

But in 1396, bishop's fort was destroyed in the war with the Order, and the borough was probably devastated in the Livonian War. It was not before the XIX century, when a new center began to form in Otepää area, this time under the name of Nuustaku.

In 1919, Matthias Johann Eisen, an important cultural figure, proposed that the name should be changed to Otepää. In 1936, according to the decision by the Head of the State, Konstatin Päts, Otepää became a town.
