Valga becomes a town

to map

11. June 1584

Since the Medieval times, Valga had been at the crossroads of important trade routes, several merchants and craftsmen operated there and occasionally even the Diet of old Livonia assembled there, but none the less, it never became important enough to receive town privileges.

It was only after the Livonian War, when the king of Poland and Lithuania (Rzeczpospolita), Stefan Bathory, gave Valga its town privileges.
