Henry is inaugurated the priest of Rubense

to map

Henry became the first priest of Ümera Latgalians in 1208, a tribe that had allied themselves with the crusaders. He was in that same position also half a century later, in 1259.

His church was in Rubese, its German name, Papendorf, is believed to have been given by Henry himself. His work took him elsewhere: he may have been a priest in Soontagana in 1227-1234 (later Pärnu-Mihkli parish).

Despite spending most of his time with his congregation, Henry participated in the crusades, most likely as a missioner. His chronicle pinpoints his activities mainly to Southern Estonia. It is possible, that he took notes while accompanying the army, and used them later to write his chronicle.
