Henry's presumable birth in Magdenburg, Germany

to map

Nowadays, Henry is considered to be a Magdenburg German, but it is not entirely unlikely that he may be of West Slav origin. At one point, while still being a relatively young man, he became part of bishop Albert's crew.

The most likely scenario is that Henry was a monk in some monastery, perhaps in Segeberg, where he was taught in Latin. Unfortunately, everything about his birth and activities preceding the Livonian era are merely presumptions, as no written data about that period can be found. His birth date has been calculated by his inauguration: when he became a priest in 1208, he must have been at least 20 years old.
