Sinking of the passenger-cargo ship “Kassari“

to map

10. December 1939

In the northern part of the Baltic Sea, an unfamiliar submarine sank the passenger steamer "Kassari" that was on its way from Sweden to Tallinn. The submarine was so close that the crew at "Kassari" was able to shout: "Don't shoot, it's an Estonian ship!" "Kassari was shot from machine-guns and cannons.

The crew escaped in a lifeboat and from afar, the submarine could be seen circling around the sunken steamer and burning a torch. The crew rowed for almost 12 hours before being delivered to a hospital.
